Guide
How to add or remove tags on many Shopify products
Updated 22 October 2026 · 3 minute read
The short answer
In your Shopify admin, go to Products, filter to the products you want, tick them and choose Add tags or Remove tags from the bulk actions. For hundreds of products with different tags each, use the Tags column of a product CSV: an import sets each product's tags to exactly what its cell holds, so keep the existing tags in it. Ecomsync can find the products that fit a description and stage the tag change on each one for review.
Same tag, many products
- Go to Products. Filter by type, vendor, collection or an existing tag.
- Tick the products, or select all that match.
- Open the bulk actions and choose Add tags or Remove tags.
- Type the tag and confirm.
Different tags per product, with a CSV
- Export the products and keep an untouched copy.
- Edit the Tags column. Tags are separated by commas, and the cell is the product's whole tag list.
- Import with the option to overwrite products with matching handles.
A blank Tags cell removes every tag from that product. Leave the column out of the file if you are not changing tags.
Tags that stay useful
- Pick one spelling and case and keep to it: gift-ideas, not Gift Ideas and gift ideas.
- Remember that automated collections and storefront filters may read tags. Check before you rename one.
- Prefer a metafield for a fact with a value, such as material or capacity. Tags suit groupings.
Questions
Do tags help SEO on Shopify?
Not directly. Tags group and filter products, and collections built on tags can rank as pages of their own.
