How to write meta descriptions for every Shopify product

Updated 22 October 2026 · 5 minute read

The short answer

A Shopify product's meta description lives in its search engine listing. Edit it product by product in the admin, fill the SEO description column of a product CSV and import it, or ask Ecomsync to write one for every product that has none and approve the list before it is saved. Aim for about 150 to 160 characters that name the product, what it is made of or does, and a reason to click.

What a meta description does

It is the short summary a search engine may show under your page title. Google rewrites it when it thinks another passage fits the search better, but a specific, accurate description is used more often and earns more clicks.

When a product has none, most Shopify themes fall back to the opening of the product description, which is rarely written for a search result.

One product at a time, in the Shopify admin

  1. In your Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
  2. Scroll to Search engine listing and select the edit icon.
  3. Write the meta description. Shopify counts the characters as you type.
  4. Save.

Many products at once, with a CSV

  1. Go to Products, select Export, and export all products as a CSV file.
  2. Keep an untouched copy of that file. Shopify has no undo for an import, and this copy is your way back.
  3. In the working copy, fill the SEO description column. A product with several variants has several rows; the description goes on its first row.
  4. Go to Products, select Import, choose the file and tick the option to overwrite products with matching handles.
  5. Open a few products and check their search engine listing.

An overwrite import writes every column in the file, and a blank cell blanks the field in the store. Columns you leave out of the file stay as they are, so import only URL handle, Title and the columns you meant to change.

With Ecomsync

  1. Ask: Write a meta description for every product that is missing one.
  2. Ecomsync finds the products with an empty meta description and writes each one from that product's own data, in your store's style and under the length limit.
  3. Review the list: every product with its photo, the current value and the new one, and a character count. Edit or deselect any of them.
  4. Approve. The descriptions are written to Shopify, and the run can be undone in one click.

What makes a good one

  • Name the product and its variant or colour in the first few words.
  • Add the one detail a shopper compares on: the material, the size, the capacity.
  • Give a reason to click, such as delivery time or a guarantee you actually offer.
  • Write a different one for every product. Two hundred copies of one sentence help nobody.
  • Do not repeat the title word for word. The title already shows above it.

Questions

How long should a Shopify meta description be?

Around 150 to 160 characters. Shopify accepts longer text, but Google usually cuts the snippet off around that length on desktop and shorter on mobile.

Does a missing meta description hurt my rankings?

It is not a ranking factor on its own, but it decides how your result reads. A clear description tends to win more clicks than whatever text the search engine picks from the page.
