How to bulk edit product titles in Shopify
Updated 22 October 2026 · 4 minute read
The short answer
Select the products in your Shopify admin and choose Bulk edit to change their titles in one grid. For a naming convention applied across hundreds of products, export a CSV, change the Title column and import it back, or ask Ecomsync to rewrite the titles to your convention and approve the list. Changing a title does not change the product's URL handle, so existing links keep working.
A handful of products, with the bulk editor
- Go to Products and tick the products you want to change.
- Select Bulk edit. The products open in a grid with one row each.
- Edit the Title cells.
- Save. There is no undo once saved, so check the grid before you do.
Hundreds of products, with a CSV
- Export all products as a CSV and keep an untouched copy as your backup.
- Change the Title column. Leave the URL handle column alone: it is how Shopify matches each row to its product, and an update needs both columns.
- Import the file with the option to overwrite products with matching handles.
- Spot check a few products, including ones with several variants.
With Ecomsync
- Ask in your own words, for example: Rewrite every product title to: product name, then the colour.
- Ecomsync reads each product, works out its name and colour from the product's own data, and stages a new title for each one.
- Review the list with the current and new title side by side. Edit any title before you apply.
- Approve. One click undoes the whole run if you change your mind.
A naming convention that holds up
- Pick one pattern and use it everywhere, for example Product name, Colour.
- Put the words shoppers search for first. Search results cut long titles off at the end.
- Add the brand only if your style calls for it, and then always in the same place.
- Spell sizes, colours and units the same way on every product.
Questions
Will changing a product title break its URL?
No. Shopify keeps the product's handle, the last part of its URL, when you change the title. Change the handle only on purpose, and add a redirect when you do.
Does the product title change the SEO title?
Only when the product has no SEO title of its own. Shopify uses the product title in search results until you set a separate SEO title in the search engine listing.
