How to set compare-at prices for a sale on Shopify
Updated 22 October 2026 · 4 minute read
The short answer
How Shopify shows a sale
Every variant has a price and an optional compare-at price. When the compare-at price is higher, most themes show it crossed out beside the price and add a sale badge.
In many countries the crossed-out price must be one you actually charged, and the EU asks for the lowest price of the previous 30 days. Check the rules where you sell before a sale goes live.
A few products, in the Shopify admin
- Open the product. For a product with variants, open each variant.
- In Pricing, enter the compare-at price above the price.
- Save. To end the sale, clear the compare-at price.
Many products, with the bulk editor or a CSV
- In Products, tick the products and choose Bulk edit, then add the compare-at price column and fill it in for each variant.
- For hundreds of variants, export a CSV, keep a copy, fill the Compare-at price column and import it with the option to overwrite products with matching handles.
- Check a few product pages to see the sale badge.
With Ecomsync
- Ask with a rule: Set compare-at prices for every product in Sale, 15 percent above the current price.
- Ecomsync applies the rule to every variant, in your store's currency, and keeps each price inside the cap and floor you set in guardrails.
- Review every variant with its SKU, the current and new value. Large runs ask you to type the store name before they apply.
- When the sale ends, ask Ecomsync to clear them, or undo the run within your plan's undo window.
Questions
What is the difference between price and compare-at price on Shopify?
The price is what the customer pays. The compare-at price is an optional higher reference price, shown crossed out to mark a discount.
How do I end a Shopify sale?
Clear the compare-at price on every variant that has one, in the admin, the bulk editor or a CSV. With Ecomsync, ask it to clear them for the collection, or undo the run.
