A Shopify catalogue audit checklist

Updated 22 October 2026 · 5 minute read

The short answer

Check five things for every product: search fields (page title and meta description), descriptions (present, specific and long enough), images and their alt text, structured data (product category and metafields), and data quality (consistent titles, collection membership, prices with a sensible compare-at). Filter the Products list or export a CSV to find the gaps, or let Ecomsync score the catalogue daily and name every gap product by product.

Search fields

  • Products with no page title or meta description, which fall back to the title and description.
  • Page titles over 60 characters and meta descriptions far past 160.
  • The same meta description on many products.

Descriptions

  • Products with no description, or a line or less.
  • The supplier's text, word for word, on many products.
  • Facts that contradict the variant data, such as a size or material.

Images and alt text

  • Products with no image, or one image where variants need their own.
  • Images with no alt text, or alt text that is a list of keywords.

Structure

  • Products with no product category, which also misses its category metafields.
  • Metafields your theme shows that are empty.
  • Products in no collection, or missing from the collection they belong in.

Data quality

  • Titles that break your naming convention.
  • A compare-at price equal to or below the price, which shows a broken sale.
  • Sale prices that outlived the sale.
  • Inconsistent tags: two spellings of one tag.

With Ecomsync

Ecomsync scores the catalogue out of 100 every day across SEO completeness, descriptions, imagery and alt text, metafields and data quality, counts the products short on each, and turns each gap into a request you can review and approve.

Questions

How often should I audit my Shopify catalogue?

Check after every large import or seasonal change, and look at the gaps monthly. A daily score catches drift before it builds up.
