Guide

How long should Shopify SEO titles and meta descriptions be?

Updated 22 October 2026 · 3 minute read

The short answer

Shopify's SEO guidance recommends a page title of 60 characters or fewer and a meta description of about 160. On a product or collection, Shopify warns that a title past 70 characters or a description past 320 might get cut off. When the fields are empty, the title falls back to the product title and the description to the product description, which is rarely written for a search result.

The numbers

  • Page title: 60 characters or fewer, as Shopify's SEO guide recommends. The product page warns past 70.
  • Meta description: about 160 characters. The product page warns past 320, and pages and blog posts past 160.
  • Empty page title: the product title is used.
  • Empty meta description: the product description is used.

Where to edit them

  1. Open the product in your Shopify admin.
  2. Scroll to Search engine listing and select the edit icon.
  3. Edit Page title and Meta description, then save.

For many products, the product CSV has SEO title and SEO description columns.

Questions

Does Google always show my meta description?

No. Google may write its own snippet from the page when it fits a search better. A specific, accurate description is still used more often.

Should the SEO title match the product title?

It can differ. The product title is for shoppers on your store, and the SEO title is for the search result, where the words people search should come first.
